Our nation has lost a true patriot and an exemplary citizen. The news media has lost a committed truth-teller who epitomized journalistic responsibility. Interfaith Alliance has lost a proud supporter and respected Honorary Chairman of the Board. I have lost an inspiring hero and a dear personal friend... Read more - Welton Gaddy
A voice of integrity and civility has been silenced with the recent death of Walter Cronkite. In an often fast-paced and tumultuous world Walter Cronkite gave us counsel and wisdom to understand our world one day at a time and more than that comfort and strength to face tomorrow. He reminded us nightly "That's the way it is" and with his unflappable reporting and humility somehow we stood taller in the brightness of the day and found comfort in the darkness of the night and the unknown... Mr. Cronkie no matter the topic it was always comfroting to hear your calm voice and know we could and would come to the best possible decision, and together as a nation would move forward together. We would do better and it would benefit all Americans. It made the decision to go to war an easy one. My nation called. - Furlton Burns
As far back as I can remember, Walter Cronkite was always someone special and important. My mom and dad listened to him each night, along with us girls. In my adulthood I continued to hold him in esteem, reporting clear, honest, and important information on the state of our country and the world. A person of his integrity will sorely be missed and I send my condolences to his loved ones. "You were very lucky to have had him for so long!" So were we!!! - Roni Love
He was only 14 years older than me, but he was someone I absolutely trusted to be honest with me every day for many years of my life. I have had the deepest respect for him, and knew I could rely on his word and his judgment. I say this, knowing that millions of others also felt the same way about "Uncle Walter". So I knew without hesitation that if he had affiliated himself with Americans United, it was an organization I wanted to be a part of. It was with a feeling of grief and lonesomeness that I heard of his passing; he leaves a vacuum that will be hard to be replaced. - Patricia Ellis
Mr. Cronkite gave us news that was important, relevant, reliable, and concise. He made sure we knew the workings of our government and the events of the world. We never thought of trusting anyone else. I am shocked that he is no longer with us, because he almost seemed to be a man beyond mortality, who would just be with us forever... I am so sorry for our loss. - Harriet Helman
Like so many Americans, I grew up watching Walter Cronkite on the television. It was almost like he was part of our family. I miss those days when you could trust the MSM. I will also miss the most trusted man in America who made it possible. America has lost a great patriot today. - Mike Hansen
Walter Cronkite was a giant among those who contributed to the public understanding of the national and world events that challenged and shaped our country during the turbulent 1960's and 70's. He was a national treasure who helped those of us growing up during that era to become informed responsible adults and should be honored by our country as such with his body lying in state in the Capitol Rotunda so America and the world can pay tribute to this great man. His presence as the one of the last thoughtful news anchors in a medium devoid of such clarity and unbiased integrity has been and always will be missed. - Jerald Breitman
Walter Cronkite was the gold standard of television journalism, which has sadly now deteriorated into "info-tainment" (e.g., CNN's fawning ten day coverage of the death of another celebrity from a drug overdose). I especially remember his Watergate coverage, when I stayed glued to the TV set for months, and I also racall staying up to watch his live coverage of the first man on the moon. I'll remember him as a true newsman who "told it like it is" without pushing a personal agenda - Willard Tucker
As private citizens who have always been interested in politics, we, too, are alarmed and have been since the "Christian right" began its movement. Their purpose, to us, is in direct contradiction to the reason our forefathers traveled to this country and established our democratic government. They wanted to escape from the imposition of so-called religious views from the government on their lives. We are happy that Mr. Cronkite, since his retirement from presenting the news and free to express his opinion, has spoken out against the bla-tant use of certain religious views to sway voters to vote for the Republican party candidates. It would be wrong even if these candidates were sincere in their religious views; however, we have had countless examples of extreme hypocrisy from many of these people. We believe everyone in our country is entitled to worship or not worship according to his or her beliefs. That is the foundation of our democracy. We also believe this entitlement does not extend to mixing religion and government. We only hope that during our lifetime this trend of tieing extreme religious views to candidates to procure votes will be exposed for what it is. We are grateful for Mr. Cronkite's efforts and mourn his passing with all the many others of our country. - Frank and Carol Corbi
It was the picture and the words of Walter Cronkite that first made me decide to contribute to Interfaith Alliance- I knew if he endorsed it, it was something I wanted to support. His death has really made me miss my mother deeply- she died 2 years ago and, of course, we always watched Walter every night while I was growing up. She had her picture taken with him in Miami- my brother is trying to find the slide. He will be dearly missed. - ginny fredricks
Thank you for your many years of living your passion and passing it on to the rest of us with such integrity. You will be missed. - S Gentile
Walter Cronkite was one of kind. He will fondly remembered and sorely missed. Kay Riggle - Kay Riggle
With Mr. Cronkite passed a generation’s reference point on what is important and what it means to be an engaged citizen. I was 12 when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, and I lived the US space program through CBS News — I have no memory of the program that doesn’t include Mr. Cronkite’s baritone narrative, analysis, and humanity. And despite his success and his influence, Mr. Cronkite’s humility was a defining attribute: As the Eagle lunar module settled on the moon’s surface on July 20, 1969, Mr. Cronkite turned to astronaut Wally Schirra and said, “Say something, Wally. I’m speechless.” Similarly, my first memory of watching the news — of JFK’s assassination — also features Mr. Cronkite’s commentary, including his taking off his glasses with moist eyes, and choking up as he delivered the news that the president was dead. - Helio Fred Garcia
Of course, I salute and remember him for all the oft-stated reasons. But he also used to narrate a program called, "You Are there." One program was about the Santo Tomas Internment Camp in Manila. He ended with his famous line, "It was a day like any other, but you were there." In our case, it was true as our family had been interned there from 1941 to 1945 by the Japanese. We were grateful to Walter Cronkite and CBS for celebrating our survival. Bless him. - Helen Dalton
I had the combination of pleasure and tension when I debated Henry Kendall after the Three mile Island accident with Walter Cronkite as the moderator. Kendall was in his anti-nuclear period then. He later won a Nobel Prize for his much earlier physics research. Walter Cronkite was a firm moderator, armed with meaningful questions. But in our few moments of audio contact after the camera went dark, I chided Mr. Cronkite about how I, a utility guy and a nuclear engineer, got aced out of equal time by Prof. Kendall. I could feel the smile as Cronkite said, "In this business, that's the way it is!" - Dave Rossin
As an admirer of Mr. Cronkite's career of integrity and professionalism, I have to say that his comment that a liberal intelect was needed for serious journalism has always impressed me as one of his more meaningful reflections. - DANIEL FAISAL
Cronkite was truly "the most trusted man in America", to say nothing of how he wasn't afraid to speak his mind and take a stand for those things he believed strongly in...RIP, Walter. - Chuck Donegan
I am so sad! He was with me every night it seems when I was growing up. As he grew older, the visits became less and less, but he was always there FOR US! Somehow I think he's in a better place FOR US! Rest in Peace, Mr. Cronkite, and thanks for being there for so long and always FOR US! - Malcolm Blue
Thank you God for blessing us with the integrity of Mr. Walter Cronkite. A news reporter, I strive to practice the fairness of his truths. Mr. Cronkite's belief in interfaith respect and solutions underline the goals shared by us with similar beliefs. While we’ve lost a bit of freedom in the death of Mr. Cronkite, we are better people because of his life Let us carry his torch of honesty, and live our lives for what he held important: Truth, justice and respect for each other. So he can say of a kinder human race: “That’s the way it is” - Greg Peterson
Truly a great man. - Sister Letitia Prentice
It's a terrible loss -- I was shocked to hear about it. But he lived a life he could be proud of. - Alice Polesky
The Truth Will set us free Long live the Truth in News Media We will miss you......... - Robert Stout
I cried this morning when I heard the news....The news. For me, Walter Cronkite enbodied the very highest standards and service that a newsman could achieve. I have been first disturbed, then saddened, then angry at the way "news" is now reported.... even by those sources we once trusted. I don't want to be "entertained". I don't want to hear spins and sound bites and someone else's "opinion". I want to know what is happening a la Walter Cronkite. I want to hear it like it is, and like it could be. I want to trust the news media to understand that I am not an ignorant child or adult, who wants to hear only what I want to hear. I want real news reporting back, with high standards and integrity and an honest effort to remain nonjudgmental and true to an ethical code that I learned in my journalistic studies. Walter Cronkite was all these things to me... and to all of us. He will be greatly missed, and I can only hope that his wonderful spirit will inspire others to follow his example and bring us back to pride, responsibility, respect, accuracy, and hopefully sanity in a profession that has so obviously lost its way. Good journey, Mr. Cronkite and thank you more than I can say for your example and your invaluable contributions to us all! - Martha Loustaunau
I ALWAYS ENJOYED MR. CRONKTE'S CBS NEWS. IT WAS A SHAME THAT HE FELT HE HAD TO HIDE HIS FAR LEFT LIBERAL LEANINGS. HE PROMOTED HIMSELF AS A NEUTRAL JOURNALIST BUT IN LATER YEARS HE MUST HAVE FELT SAFE LETTING THE TRUTH COME OUT: HE WAS A LIBERAL THROUGH AND THROUGH. HE DIDN'T NEED TO USE DECEPTION. - GARY GLANZER
One of my earliest memory of my father (who died when I was 10) is telling me to "Shut up and let me listen to Walter!" The entire household gathered around a very small black and white TV when he was on. I remember when Armstrong walked on the moon how thrilled Walter was and so was I. I will miss 'Uncle Walter.' - Anna Walker
As a citizen of Walter Cronkite's generation we are especially saddened by his passing. Our sincere condolences to his family. - Muriel Derrow
Walter Cronkite you have a beacon of hope, faith, light and truth as far back as my memory goes. You were always an inspiration and touched many lives through all kinds of days both good and dark. Thank for sharing your voice of integrity to many generations of Americans. We will miss you and God Bless you forever. - Donna Sitterding
I have known people who were honest and forthright about some things, but never have I known someone like Walter Cronkite, who was honest and forthright in every aspect of his life and beliefs. - Larry Henson
As one of the first recipients of the Walter Cronkite Faith & Freedom Award, I had the unique opportunity to meet Mr. Cronkite, the man who, as I was growing up, brought me every piece of television news that was important to my life. We have lost a great American icon, a man who defined journalism and defended democracy. It is my great hope that we will, in these days of tribute and remembrance, recommit ourselves to the model of integrity and decency that made him the most trusted man in America. - Donna Red Wing
