Rabbi Karen Landy will be leading the service, which will include both traditional Jewish prayers, music, and chanting, as well as more modern prayers and music. Shabbat means sabbath and the Jewish service of welcoming in the Sabbath on Friday nights is one that Havurat Shalom has always treasured as a part of our tradition. This special Shabbat, during Pride month, all are encouraged to attend to celebrate our LGBTQIA+ family while being able to experience some of our beautiful Jewish traditions. Havurat Shalom particularly welcomes the presence and collaboration of Reverend Dr. Lawrence Jay, Rolling Ridge, American Baptist; Minister Renée Manning, West Parish Church, United Church of Christ; Reverend Genevieve Hosterman, South Church, United Church of Christ; and Pastor Adam Isbitsky, Ballard Vale United Church, United Church of Christ.

Families with young children are invited to attend a special pizza picnic before the main service, which will include a brief Shabbat celebration for young children, music and age-appropriate activities. Dubbs Weinblatt (they/them) is the Founder and CEO of Thank You For Coming Out, which inspires authenticity and belonging by uplifting, centering, and celebrating LGBTQIA+ stories and identities through DEI trainings and workshops, their podcast, improv show, and other forms of art and storytelling.

They are the Co-Founder and Executive Producer of Craft Your Truth, an organization that encourages LGBTQ folks to use performance art to express their stories and connect with their community. Previously, Dubbs was the Associate Director of Education and Training for New York at Keshet, a national nonprofit working with Jewish institutions on LGBTQ equality. Dubbs’ writing has been featured on Hey, Alma, has an essay in the book Welcome to Kweendom and contributed to the #1 Amazon book Redoing Gender. They are a recipient of the GCN Impact Awards, was named one of Logo’s NewNowNext 6 Inspiring LGBTQ Jewish Activists You Should Be Following, and was recently named one of Jewish Week’s 36 Under 36.

Join us in commemorating Pride Month with a compelling discussion on the intersection of LGBTQ+ history and the Holocaust. Delve into the legacy of the pink triangle and how knowledge of the Holocaust shaped the fight for queer liberation and influenced American gay rights activism. As a symbol used by the Nazis to identify and persecute queer men and transgender women, the pink triangle has since been reclaimed as a symbol of resistance and pride. Our panel of experts include include organizers and activists from Queer communities across Philadelphia including Galia Godel (J. Proud Philly), Jazmyn Henderson (ACT UP Philadelphia) and Mark Segal (Philadelphia Gay News). Together the group will explore the significance of the pink triangle and its impact on LGBTQ+ history and culture.

The event will be moderated by W. Jake Newsome, author of “Pink Triangle Legacies: Coming Out in the Shadow of the Holocaust,” who will guide us through the complex history and meaning of this important symbol. Jake Newsome is an accomplished author and scholar who has extensively researched the pink triangle and its impact on LGBTQ+ history and culture. More information coming soon!
