Interfaith Alliance is a network of people of diverse faiths and beliefs from across the country working together to build a resilient democracy and fulfill America’s promise of religious freedom and civil rights not just for some, but for all.
We mobilize powerful coalitions to challenge Christian nationalism and religious extremism, while fostering a better understanding of the healthy boundaries between religion and government. We advocate at all levels of government for an equitable and just America where the freedoms of belief and religious practice are protected, and where all persons are treated with dignity and have the opportunity to thrive.
Advocate: We’re holding government officials accountable at every level, demanding an America where the freedom to believe and practice religion is protected for all.
Mobilize: We’re mobilizing a diverse, nationwide network of advocates, clergy, lay people, activists, and organizations to challenge the rise of religious extremism.
Educate: We’re equipping political leaders, religious communities, and everyday Americans with the tools and knowledge they need to push back against the erosion of true religious freedom and equality.
Forge: We’re building powerful coalitions across the country to confront these threats head on, ensuring America’s promise of religious freedom and civil rights isn’t just for the few - it’s for everyone.
Interfaith Alliance was created in 1994 to celebrate religious freedom and to challenge the bigotry and hatred arising from religious and political extremism infiltrating American politics. Over the years, we’ve worked tirelessly to defend the values that define this nation—values of inclusion, dignity, and the protection of each individual’s right to believe as they choose.
As we celebrated our 30th anniversary in 2024, we took a moment to reflect on the incredible work we’ve done, the partnerships we’ve built, and the progress we’ve achieved.

Interfaith Alliance is a leading advocate for multi-faith democracy and healthy boundaries between religion and government. It was among the founding organizations of a national sign-on letter, joined by more than 1,800 nonprofit organizations, voicing opposition to the proposed settlement agreement in National Religious Broadcasters v. Bessent, a case in which the Trump administration and a coalition of religious broadcasters sought to create an effective exemption to the Johnson Amendment, the 70-year-old law that bars 501(c)(3) organizations, including houses of worship, from endorsing or opposing political candidates. Had the settlement been approved, religious leaders would have been able to make partisan endorsements from the pulpit without risking their tax-exempt status. Today, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas dismissed the case, finding it lacked jurisdiction.

Interfaith Alliance is a leading advocate for multi-faith democracy and healthy boundaries between religion and government. It joined a friend-of-the-court brief from religious organizations in Chiles v. Salazar, in support of Colorado’s right to protect LGBTQ+ youth from harmful, discredited “conversion therapy” practices.

A new report by the Public Religion Research Institute finds that support for Christian nationalism is growing in the U.S., with nearly one-third of Americans qualifying as adherents or sympathizers and higher concentrations in parts of the South and Midwest. The study highlights strong links between these beliefs and support for authoritarianism, political violence, and anti-immigrant policies, underscoring concerns about their impact on democracy and religious freedom.

The Interfaith Alliance team brings a wide range of experiences and perspectives to our mission.
