Freedom Not Extremism
All Americans should be free to love who they love, be their true authentic selves, make decisions over their own bodies, and practice their faith free from fear.
One narrow religious view should not be imposed on us all
LGBTQ freedom and reproductive freedom are two of the most important individual rights at stake in the United States today. Hard-won advances are being rolled back at the federal, state and local levels across the country. As a religion and democracy organization, Interfaith Alliance will not back away from these fights, and will work towards a future where these fundamental rights aren’t up for debate.
We know that attacks on LGBTQ freedom and reproductive freedom are regularly justified by pointing to a narrow religious understanding of human sexuality. We not only reject the imposition of religious beliefs on us all, but also celebrate widespread support for LGBTQ and reproductive rights among most religious Americans. We celebrate an America that is welcoming of people of all faiths and religious backgrounds. We are committed to countering hate-based violence and building a united interfaith front against antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of bigotry. We reject Christian nationalism and the inherent violence it projects, and seek to model its antithesis of religious pluralism by forging strong relationships across lines of religious difference.
Our vision for individual freedom
One narrow religious view shouldn’t be imposed on us all.
Countering hate
Religious leaders and people of faith are uniquely positioned to diffuse hateful rhetoric by providing an alternative message of love, inclusion, and mutual respect. We are particularly concerned with the rise in antisemitism and Islamophobia in the United States in recent years and the role that extreme Christian Nationalism is playing in that violence. Interfaith Alliance is forging a united interfaith front against all forms of religious bigotry.
Reproductive freedom
Every American has the right to seek essential care led by their own beliefs and circumstances, not be subjected to the morality and religious views that public officials have codified into law. Most religious Americans do not want to ban abortion and we are rallying diverse faith communities in opposition to anti-abortion extremism that is causing great harm to individuals and families across the country.
LGBTQ freedom
We insist that religion should not be used to legitimize discrimination. For decades we have mobilized powerful coalitions of people from diverse faiths and beliefs to fight back against degrading efforts to attack LGBTQ Americans and demand the right for us all to live with full dignity, safety and equal rights.
As people of diverse faith traditions, we can stand up to religious extremism
Together, we can make a significant impact in this pivotal moment in our nation's history.
